ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Conventional processes for the thermal decomposition and reaction of organic and inorganic substances which operate with mechanically moved packing bodies in a heated reactor result only in a slow specific throughput. Higher throughputs can be attained when the packing bodies are passed along the reactor wall in the axial direction and returned at the reactor centre. This is preferably attained with a stirrer consisting of stirrer axle supporting arms and coils in which the coils have a pitch of 10 to 45°, the coils make an angle of 45 to 85° with the reactor wall, the supporting arms are inclined by an angle of 5 to 45° and the width of the supporting arms and coils is greater than the diameter of the packing bodies.
