A B S T R A C T By heating an N-(2-hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamate ester pro- tected at its hydroxy group as an ether in the presence of an azide, the corresponding 1-(protected hydroxyethyl)-1H-tetra- zole-5-thiol is obtained, and then, if required, deprotecting the etheric protection to give an industrially useful chemi- cal, 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1H-tetrazols-5-thiol of the formula: Image or its mercaptide salt of the formula: Image wherein R is an ether forming group and R2 is hydrogen, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal.
