ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE (R)-4-amino-3-hydroxy butanoic acid is produced from the hydrochloride of methyl or ethyl ester of (2S,4R)-4-hydroxy proline via the intermediate stages of the corresponding non-iso- lated (R)-4-hydroxy-1-pyrroline-2-carboxylic ester and of the isolated (R)-4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidone. By means of this process the pharmacologically interesting (R)-4-amino-3-hydroxy butanoic acid can be obtained in high yields.
