ABSTRACT A submersible electric D.C. motor (32) is pro- vided which has a housing (14) that seals the motor from the surrounding water and holds in a controlled atmosphere which is made to be low in oxygen content and to have free water vapor. Magnetic means (80, 96) are provided to trans- mit mechanical energy through the housing and liquid means (122) are provided to remove heat from the motor.
