ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A filter apparatus for filtering solid, liquid or gaseous particles, with or without an electrical charge, out of a flow of gaseous medium through the apparatus, has filter elements which are spaced from each other in the direction of flow of the gaseous medium. Each filter element comprises a carrier plate and a substrate carried thereon. The carrier plate and the substrate have spaced-apart openings therethrough, the openings of adjacent filter elements being out of alignment with each other. The substrate serves to store a filter medium. Each opening through the filter element has a guide portion for guiding the gaseous medium, with each guide portion extending in a sleeve-like configuration around the edge of the corresponding opening. The guide portions project from the filter element at least on the upstream side thereof to prevent filter medium of the respective substrate from being accidentally entrained through the openings through the filter element, even at high gaseous medium flow rates.
