D E S C R I P T I O N of an invention having for a title: "PROCESS FOR THE CARBONYLATION OF SECONDARY BENZYL HALIDS". ABSTRACT A process is here described for the preparation of carbo- xylic acids of formula (I): Image (I) wherein Ar represents either an aromatic or heteroaromatic group containing one or more rings, however linked together, having globally up to 20 carbon atoms, preferably chosen from amongst: a phenyl-, naphthyl-, diphenyl- and thienyl group also substi- tuted with groups inert under reaction conditions, preferably chosen from amongst alkyl, cycloalkyl and aryl groups, optional ly substituted, from amongst halogens, alcoxyl, phenoxyl and ketonic groups, and wherein n is an integer chosen between 1 and 2, characterized in that a 1-halogen-1-arylethane of for- mula (II): Image (II) wherein Ar has the meaning already previously herein above de- fined, and X is chosen between Cl and Br, is made to react in an organic solvent with carbon monoxide and an alkaline hydro- xide in the presence of a cobalt hydrocarbonyl salt catalyst or of its precursors, at a temperature comprised between about 20 °C and 70 °C under a pressure comprised between about 1 and 10 atmospheres, in a byphase aqueous/organic system consisting of: a) an aqueous phase containing the alkaline hydroxide b) an organic phase consisting of the starting halid of for- mula (II) dissolved in the organic solvent substantially unmixable with the alkaline aqueous phase, in the presen- ce of an "onium" salt and of the cobalt salt catalyst or of its precursors. The products thus obtained find a particular use in the field of pharmaceutical products (such as analgesics, antipyre- thics, etc.), and as intermediates in chemical syntheses in ge- neral, in the field of fine chemicals, or in the field of phyto- pharmaceutical products.
