ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a method of preparing high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols. According to this method, the phenols are subjected to an oxydative cou- pling reaction with oxygen to produce poly(phenylene ethers) which are subsequently reacted with an epoxide of the general formula (I) Image (I) where R1 and R2 can be identical or different and are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aryloxy, alkoxy or carboxyalkyl, each of which may contain a furtehr epoxide group, or C3-C20-alkyl- substituted amino, or R1 is hydrogen and R2 is one of the above groups, or R1 and R2 form part of a cycloalkyl ring. The poly- phenylene ethers that are so obtained, are completely blocked and have a high molecular weight, a pale intresic colour and a high stability to thermal and thermooxidative attack.
