Abstract of the Disclosure An immobilized bacteria composition which degrades pentachlorophenol (PCP), comprising bacteria of the genus Flavobacterlum, free cells of which degrade PCP and exhibit sustained growth in aqueous media having PCP concentrations of 250-500 ppm, immobilized in essen- tially water-insoluble alginate gel particles; and the method of using the same to detoxify aqueous PCP.
