ABSTRACT A gun barrel chamber is disclosed in which an ammunition unit can be moved in its longitudinal direction up to the bore of the barrel for ramming the driving band of the ammunition unit into position in the rifle origin of the bore of the barrel. The barrel chamber comprises an extended rear cavity and a front cavity, connected directly to the front end of the rear cavity. The front cavity is substantially cylindrical or slightly conical, expanding backwards. The front cavity has such a diameter and length with respect to guiding means on the ammunition unit that when the ammunition unit moves along the bottom of the chamber it is "guided up" before the guiding means enters into the bore of the barrel and that said "guiding up" means that the longitudinal axis of the ammunition unit substantially coincides with the bore axis. In one preferred embodiment of the invention the bore of the barrel from the rifle origin and forwards for a distance corresponding to the distance between the front guiding means and the driving band of the ammunition unit is slightly widened.
