ABSTRACT A locking mechanism actuated by a magnetic key is provided with an optimum number of combinations by providing locking magnets with a stronger magnetic field at one end than at the other end . The tendency for one magnet to influence the movement of any adjacent magnet is thus reduced, thereby permitting the coding magnets to be placed closer together and increasing the number of possible combinations within a given area.
