Abstract Pretreatment Process for Amorphous Hydrated Metal Oxide Primer for Organic Adhesively Bonded Joints A method of bonding articles together utilizing a short term corrosive pretreatment prior to application of an amorphous hydrated metal oxide primer and an adhesive resulting in a joint resistant to crack propagation. The method comprises bonding a plurality of articles together, at least one of which is metal. The surface of the metal article is exposed to a corrosive environment at a temperature less than about 50°C. Then a layer comprising MX(OR)y wherein x is 1, y is 3 or 4, M is any metal capable of forming a stable alkoxide and R is an organic radical, is applied to the pretreated surface. Then the coated metal article is exposed to moisture and a temperature of about 25°C to about 125°C. The metal article is bonded to another article with a polymeric adhesive.
