Abstract of the Disclosure An improved stretcher/expander roller for cross-stretching and separating the constituent strips of a slit web passing thereover comprises a rigid sleeve circumscribed by an elastomeric cover. The cover has either a single or double spiral groove therein, or a plurality of annular grooves so as to create cross- stretching members between the groove(s) which are of increasing flexibility from the roller center to each of the roller edges. By making the roller cross-stretching members of increasing flexiblity from the roller center to each of the roller edges, the amount of cross-stretching will be greater near the roller edges, so as to achieve the desired separation of the web strips.
