EXTRAOCULAR METHODS OF TREATING THE EYE WITH LIQUID PERFLUOROCARBONS Abstract of the Disclosure Extraocular ophthalmic preparations useful as therapeutic, lubricating or protective agents are dis- closed. Liquid perfluorocarbons and substituted deriva- tives are the active components of the ophthalmic prepara- tions. The neat perfluorocarbon liquids are not aqueous, wherefore, isotonicity and pH need not be considered in their preparation. Liquid sterility may be maintained without the addition of preservatives. Cornea and conjunc- tiva surfaces are provided with greater amounts of oxygen when the perfluorocarbon liquids are employed as eye drops.
