-1- ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE Novel 8-chloro-1,5-benzothiazepine derivatives of the formula: Image (I) wherein R1 is hydrogen or a group of the formula: R2CO-, R2 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, and a salt thereof are disclosed. Said derivative (I) amd a salt thereof are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of novel 5-alkyl-8-chloro-benzothiazepine derivatives which show potent hypotensive and/or coronary or cerebral vasodilating activities.
