ABSTRACT A spectrum analyser unit that is controlled by a microcomputer such that the operating parameters are established by keyboard entry. The analyser employs the hetrodyning principle in which the local oscillator is implemented as a frequency synthesiser for which the stepping rate is determined by the microcomputer in accordance with an adaptive settling time algorithm. The frequency translated signal is filtered by a narrow band crystal filter, converted to digital form and stored in a display memory following processing by the microcomputer in accordance with a data compression algorithm. The spectrum is then displayed on an accompanying oscilloscope along with a user controlled marker which can be located at any point of interest on the spectrum thereby providing numerical readout of both amplitude and frequency of the designated point.
