ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A railroad FROG casting has a main casting portion having a top area of triangular shape and a heel extension at one end of the main casting portion, the top area widening towards the heel portion. Flangeways adjacent opposite sides of the top area converge towards a throat, which extends towards a toe. Solid sections spaced apart along the casting each comprise a solid mass of metal extending to opposite side surfaces of the casting and from top to bottom of the casting and downwardly open recesses are spaced apart along the casting and formed in the underside of the casting between successive ones of the solid sections, with supporting structures integral with the solid sections bridging the recesses. This counteracts shrinkage and void formation during manufacture of the casting.
