ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The known nuclear hydroxylation of phenol or phenol derivatives with organic hydrogen peroxide solutions in the presence of a catalyst is carried out with hydrogen peroxide solutions which are produced with solvents whose azeotrope boiling points with water lie below the boiling point of hydrogen peroxide. These hydrogen peroxide solutions are extremely low in water. Silenium dioxide is simultaneously used as the catalyst. In addition to the fact that the nuclear hydroxylation can industrially be carried out in a much simpler manner it is possible for the first time to control the ortho to para ratio and two ortho ratios among each other.
