Abstract of the Disclosure A tread substrate or shoe sole for sandals, mules and other footwear includes a plurality of interconnected modular elements which can be joined together. The elements can be made from the same material or plural materials bonded together. The elements are substantially cylindrical and can have different diameters in a single sole structure. Additionally, the elements can be hollow cylindrical bodies and can have differing wall thicknesses and polygonal cross-sections.
