The present invention comprises novel DNA compounds which encode human protein S activity. The human protein S cDNA sequence consists of a coding region for a 676 amino acid precursor; the coding region encodes a 41 amino acid leader peptide, 635 amino acids corresponding to the mature protein, and a stop codon. Eukaryotic expression vectors have been constructed which comprise the novel protein S activity-encoding DNA and drive expression of protein S when transformed into an appropriate host cell.
