ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device is disclosed for preserving liquid in a partly filled container, the liquid being a liquid such as wine that is subject to degradation on exposure to ambient air. The device comprises a resiliently deformable stopper having an upper body portion, a spigot adapted to be fitted into a neck of the container, a central passageway permitting the flow of gas therethrough, and a resiliently deformable non-return valve in the form of a slit valve in the pas- sageway integral with the stopper. The non-return valve is manually openable to permit release of a pressure differen- tial thereacross by resilient deformation of the stopper. separable pump member has a main body, the main body of the separable pump member and the upper body portion of the stop- per having complementary interfitting parts. The stopper and the pump member can be directly fitted together in gas-tight relationship such that gas can be urged through the passage- way upon actuation of the pump member when fitted to the stopper and the pump member can be removed after a desired quantity of gas has been urged through the passageway. The pressure differential is thereafter maintained by the stopper until released upon manual opening of the non-return valve. In order to preserve wine, the stopper is placed in the neck of the bottle and the air withdrawn with the aid of the pump member, which is subsequently removed. To re-use the wine the vacuum is released by pinching the valve and the stopper can be easily removed.
