There are described 7-(2-(2-aminothiazol- 4-yl)-2-hydroxyiminoacetamido]-3-cephem or salts thereof of the general formula: (see fig.I) wherein R1 is an organic group and R2 is carboxy or protected hydroxy. These compounds are prepared in high yield from the corresponding 7-amino-3-cephem compounds and 2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-acyloxyiminoacetyl halide or a salt thereof. These compounds exhibit high antimicrobial activity, inhibiting the growth of a wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms including Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms and are useful as antimicrobial agents. Intermediates useful for the preparation of these compounds are also described.
