ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A speed detector for a sewing machine comprising a rotor rotatable with a drive shaft of the sewing machine, and a stator. The rotor and the stator are formed of a ferromagnetic material and each have a multitude of teeth which face in opposition to the teeth of the other forming a gap therebetween. A first permanent magnet forms a first magnetic circuit with the rotor and stator, and a first coil is disposed in the first magnetic circuit to generate a first voltage at a frequency proportional to the rotational speed of the rotary shaft. A second permanent magnet is magnetized in opposite direction to the direction of magnetization of the first magnet to form a second magnetic circuit with the stator and rotor, the second magnetic circuit, and a second coil disposed in said second magnetic. circuit to develop a second voltage at the same frequency as the first voltage. The first and second coils are connected in series so that the first and second voltages are construc- tively added.
