Abstract of the Disclosure A process is disclosed for shirring tubular casings of an elastically and plastically deformable material, in particular sausage casings. The casing is conveyed in the direction of its longitudinal axis and inflated with a supporting gas. A shirring tool lays the casing down in folds and tightly compresses the folds against a counterforce to form a stick. In addition, in order to enhance the shirring density and the breaking strength of the stick, the casing is expanded before the stirring element in the circumferential direction, preferably by 5 to 15%. It is particularly advantageous to cause the shirring element to act immediately after the expansion, before the elastic restoration is complete. A shirring device suitable for carrying out the process is also disclosed, which has a stretching body on the shirring mandrel before the shirring tool.
