Abstract of the Disclosure A process is disclosed for the production of 4-(trialkylammonium)-acetoacetarylides having the formula: Image wherein R1 is H or -NO2 and R2 is an alkyl radical having 12 to 18 C atoms. Diketene is brominated using bromine in a chlorinated organic solvent at a temperature of from -10° to -30°C. Subsequently, while maintaining this tem- perature, the aromatic amine needed for the formation of the arylide and the corresponding trialkylamine compound are added. The aromatic amine and the trialkylamine com- pound are used in dissolved form or suspended in a chlorinated organic solvent. The mixture is heated slowly to a temperature of from 20° to 30°C. and the end product is separated from the reaction mixture.
