ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A two speed hydraulic drive system for a boom mounted digger. The system includes a three position directional control valve which directs fluid to and from tandem hydraulic motors. In a low speed operating mode of the digger, a pilot operated valve is positioned to maintain the two motors in parallel. In a high speed operating mode, the pilot operated valve is shifted by pilot line pressure to a posi- tion wherein the exhaust line of one motor is connected with a regen- eration loop leading back to the common inlet manifold of the motors, thus maintaining the motors in a condition with one motor idle and all fluid directed to the other motor. The pilot line is controlled by a manually operated shift valve which effects shifting externally of the digger to minimize gear wear.
