-13- ABSTRACT: Apparatus for reading and/or recording an optical information structure in the form of a track. An apparatus is described for reading and/or recording a trackwise arranged optical structure (2) in a record carrier (1), which apparatus comprises a tracking-error detection system which comprises a beam-splitting element (14) and four detectors (16, 17, 18, 19) the first detector (16) and the second detector (1) cooperating with a first (b1) of two sub-beams formed by the beam-splitting element, and the third detector (18) and the fourth detector (19) cooperating with the second sub-beam (b2). It is demonstrated that for larger phase depths of the information details a very suitable tracking signal is obtained by adding the difference between the signals from the first and the second detector to the difference between the signals from the third and the fourth detector. Figs. 1, 2.
