ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus and method for sharpening a studded crown of a rock drill, with a rotating grinding wheel and an apparatus for rotating the wheel, such as an electromotor. A periphery of the rotating grinding wheel constitutes the sharpening surface for grinding the hard-metal stud on the studded crown, with the grinding wheel being supported to rotate about its own axis and swivel with respect to the stud to be sharpened, such that the circular or swiveling motion of the rotating grinding wheel takes place about a swiveling axis passing through the stud to be sharpened. The shape of the sharpening periphery of the grinding wheel may be advantageously fluted or curved such that the periphery itself forms a substantially circular arc, whereby the combined rotational and swiveling motion of the grinding wheel produces a substantially hemispherical shape on the hard-metal stud being sharpened.
