ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a coating apparatus in which a web to be coated is well supported during application of a coating agent and the application of the coating agent is controlled. The speed of the web can be essentially increased in relation to the prior art. The apparatus comprises a closed group of three coating rolls which form with each other two coating nips. On the first coating roll there is provided first coating supply apparatus and thereafter knife or doctor blades. On the second roll there is provided second coating supply apparatus disposed downstream of the first nip. Thereafter there provides knife or doctor blades on the second coating roll. After this the web runs through a second nip formed by the second and the third coating rolls. The thus- coated web is released from the third coating roll and transferred for example to a drying apparatus. If necessary, non-contact heating apparatus are disposed adjacent the first and the second coating rolls for drying the web and the coating agents radiation.
