Abstract of the Disclosure: Substituted N-acyl-.alpha.-amino acid esters of the formula Ia or Ib Image Image (Ia), (Ib), where R1 is hydrogen, n-C1-C5-alkyl, phenyl, thien-3-yl, 2-methylthioethyl or N-chloroacetyl-4-aminobutyl, R2 is methyl, propyl, n-butyl or -(CH2CH20)n-R4, where n is 1 or 2 and R4 is C1-C4-alkyl, phenyl, methylphenyl or chlorophenyl, and R3 is C1 (except when, in Ia, R1 is phenyl and R2 is CH2CH2OR4), Br, methoxy or the group Image , where R5 and R6 indePendently of one another are each C1-C6-alkyl and X is oxygen or sulfur, in particular as agents for lowering the en- dogenous ethylene level in plants, a process for the preparation of the compounds Ia or Ib, and the use of these compounds for influencing plant growth by acting on plants or their seed.
