Abstract: The present invention is directed to quinazolinone compounds of the formula: Image (I) wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, R1 is a lower alkyl, a phenyl, a phenyl substituted by a member selected from the group consisting of a lower alkyl and a halogen atom or phenyl-C1-3 alkyl and R2, R3, R4 and R5 are the same or different and each represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, a lower alkoxycarbonyl or a lower alkoxycarbonyl- lower alkenyl, or two adjacent groups of R2, R3, R4 and R5 when taken together form methylenedioxy and the other two are hydrogen atoms, or a salt thereof. These compounds are useful for the prophylaxis and treatment of various diabetic complications. The present invention is also directed to processes for the preparation of the quinazolinone compounds, and pharmaceutical compositions containing said compounds as an active ingredient.
