NOVEL PHENYL-SUBSTITUTED SULFONAMIDES Abstract of the Disclosures Sulfonamides, of the following formula, are disclosed as useful selective pre-emergence or post-emergence herbicides: Image wherein J is Image , Image , J6 J12 Image , Image , J13 J14 Image , Image , J15 J16 - 2 - Image . Image , J17 J18 Image , Image , J19 J20 Image , Image , J21 J23 n is O, 1 or 2; W is O or S; W1 is O or S; R is H or CH3; R1 is H, F. Cl. Br, CH3, OCH3, CF3, SCH3 or OCF2H; R2 is H or C1-C4 alkyl; R3 and R4 are independently H, C1-C4 alkyl, Cl or Br; R5 is H or CH3; R6 is H or CH3; R7 is H or CH3; - 3 - A is Image , Image , Image , Image , Image or Image ; X is CH3, OCH3, OCH2CH3, Cl, P, Br, OCF2H, CH2F or CF3; Y is H, CH3, OCH3, OC2H5, CH2OCH3, NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2, C2H5, CF3, SCH3, OCH2CH=cH2. OCH2C?CH, OCH2CF3, CN, N3, OCH2cH2OCH3, CH25CH3. CR6(QCH3)2, Image . Image . Image . CR6(QCH2CH3)2 or QCF2T where Q is O or S and T is H. CHClF. CHBrF or CHFCF3; Z is CH, N, CCH3, CC2H5. CCl or CBr; Y1 is O or CH2: X1 is CH3, OCH3, OC2H5 or OCF2H; X2 is CH3, C2H5 or CH2CF3: Y2 is OCH3 or OC2H5. SCH3, SC2H5, CH3 or CH2CH: X3 is CH3 or OCH3; provided that a) when W is S, then R is H, A is Image , Z is CH or N, and Y is CH3. OCH3. OC2H5, CH2OCH3, - 4 - C2H5, CF3, SCH3, OCH2CH=CH2, OCH2C?CH, OCH2CF3, OCH2CH2OCH3, CH(OCH3)2 or Image ; b) the total number of carbon atoms in R3 and R4 is less than or equal to 4; c) when X is Cl, F or Br, then Z is CH and Y is OCH3, OC2H5, NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2 or OCF2H; and d) when R5 is CH3, then n is O: and their agriculturally suitable salts.
