ABSTRACT Disclosed is a process for preparing an N-mono-substituted-p-phenylenediamine which comprises reacting a compound having the formula: Image = 0 wherein R is C1-C12 alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl,, or phenyl substituted in the 2-, 4-, or 2,4- positions by C1-C8 alkyl; and R' is hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl with a primary or secondary alcohol in the presence of a base in the absence of hydrogen and noble metal catalyst.
