ABSTRACT A paging receiver includes a memory for storing the receiver's own paging number and decrypting information for selecting, out of decrypting methods corresponding to several encrypting methods, one corresponding to the paging number. A receiver circuit receives a paging number and a message following it. A decrypting circuit compares the received paging number and the stored paging number and, if they are found identical, decrypts the received message by the decrypting method selected on the basis of the decrypt- ing information. A display screen displays the decrypted message. The invention makes it difficult to eavesdrop or tap messages even if the paging number of the receiver is known by many others.
