ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention seeks to avoid vibration and damage to workpieces in machines for turning and polishing contact lenses. A drawback experienced with known machines for this purpose is that vibration created by a prime mover, e.g. an electric motor, is transmitted to a driven rotatable support for a lens. This is detrimental to the surface finish imparted to the lens by a tool also if excess pressure is applied to the workpiece then damage can occur due to the in- creased torque. In this invention the drive is transmitted from the prime mover to the lens support by a permanent magnetic coupling which avoids physical con- tact between the lens support and said prime mover and has the property of stopp- ing transmitted drive when excess torque above the magnetic breaking valve is applied.
