ABSTRACT The present invention provides an agent for the detection of esterolytic and/or proteolytic enzymes, consisting of an absorbent carrier, a film layer, a powder mixture, a lyophilisate, a solution or a reagent tablet containing an appropriate esterase and/or protease detection principle, a buffer and optionally further conventionally used additives, wherein the esterase and/or protease detection principle used is a combination of a specially substituted diazonium salt and an approp- riate ester, the reactivity of which is mutually coordinated by appropriate selection of the substituents in such a manner that a sufficiently rapid coupling takes place with the alcohol component liberated from the ester but no reaction with other components of the test solution occurs. The present invention also provides new esters, which are substrates for esterolytic and/or proteolytic enzymes, said esters being compounds of the general formula:- Image in which R"1, R"2, R"3 and R"4, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, alkylamino or dialkylamino radicals or in which two adjacent substituents can also represent a fused benzene ring, A is a residue of an amino acid or of a peptide and B is a nitrogen protective group conventional in peptide chemistry or derived therefrom. Furthermore, the present invention provides a process for the preparation of these new esters and, in addition, is concerned with the use thereof for pre- paring agents for the detection of esterolytic and/or proteolytic enzymes.
