ABSTRACT A system is provided for washing pulp including a tank to contain the pulp, and a rotatable drum disposed for partial submergence in the pulp to rotate and to support a mat of pulp during part of the washing process. A liquid distributor distributes washing liquid on the pulp supported on the drum, and a liquid collector is coupled to remove liquid from the interior of the drum. A drive means is provided to rotate the drum, load measurement means measures the load on the drive means, and a pulp consistency control means conveys liquid from the liquid collector to combine with the pulp in the tank at a rate according to the load measured by the load measurement means.
