Abstract Downhole mobility and propulsion apparatus comprises a cylindrical tool body attachable at a first end to a wireline and at a second end to the tool to be propelled downhole. A plurality of gate members is positioned around the wall of the tool body, these gate members are motor driven between opened and closed positions. In the closed position fluid flow is disallowed through the tool body; in the open position fluid flow is allowed through the tool body, There is a plurality of ports in the wall of the tool body and below the gate members. These ports allow fluid flow within the tool body between the ports and the gate members when the gate members are in the open position. An impeller is located in the tool body intermediate the gate members and the ports for directing of the fluid flow. The arrangement enbales improved positioning and mobility of the tool in the hole.
