Abstract The invention provides a catheterization apparatus for rapidly delivering oxygenated nutrient to the cerebro-spinal fluid of a patient suspected of suffering from ischemic central nervous system tissue. The apparatus comprises a catheter for providing a perfusion pathway for the oxygenated nutrient to the lateral ventricle of the patient's brain, a guide mating with the catheter for directing the catheter towards the lateral ventricle, and a harness, positionable with respect to the head of the patient, with the guide being mounted thereon, for positioning the guide with respect to the head so that the catheter may be reliably inserted into the lateral ventricle. This apparatus may be easily used by paramedics and by emergency room personnel.
