ABSTRACT Phenoxy phthalic anhydrides of the formula Image where R may be independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkoxy, substituted alkoxy, carboaryloxy, substituted carboaryloxy, cyano, nitro, keto, acetamido, formyl, tertiary amino, aryl, substituted aryl, aryloxy, substituted aryloxy, or two R's may be combined to form a fused hydrocarbon ring, and n is 1-3, are prepared by the reaction of a fluorophthalic anhydride with a correspondingly substituted phenol compound in the presence of potassium fluoride and a polar, aprotic solvent. The phenoxy phthalic anhydrides prepared are useful in a variety of applications, such as curing agents for epoxy resins.
