ABSTRACT An open air high voltage resistor for use with high voltage insulators, on which flashover tends to occur due to deposition of polluting external layers of dirt. The resistor comprises a resistance element and is connected in series with the insulator so that any discharge current through the external layers produces a voltage drop through the resistance element. This voltage drop reduces the potential across the insulator preventing and retarding flashover. The voltage drop across the resistance element is of at least about 5% and preferably of 10% to 30% of the full line to ground potential applied to the insulator at the critical leakage current over the insulator.
