A B S T A C T A swimming pool cleaner which includes a head 2 having an inlet 3 and an outlet 4 and a transversley contractable and expansible tubular member 15 between the inlet and the outlet. A chamber 17 is defined within the head around the tubular member and the outlet from the head is extended by an extension pipe 13. A suction communication is provided between the chamber and the outlet end of the extension pipe. In use, suction is applied through the tubular member and to the chamber 17 so that water is sucked through the flexible tubular member resulting in the tubular member contracting and expanding causing a cyclical interruption of flow through the tubular member which in turn causes the pool cleaner to move over the submerged surfaces of the pool.
