ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of a substituted phenyl- hydrazine by the reaction of a substituted chlorobenzene with hydrazine or hydrazine hydrate. Compounds of the general formula Image are reacted with hydrazine or hydrazine hydrate to form compounds of the formula I Image (I) R1, R2, R3, X and n are defined in the specification. Compounds of formula I are useful as intermediates in preparing herbicidally active compounds.
