VIDEO STILL PLAYER WITH A BUFFERED DATA INPUT CHANNEL ABSTRACT A video still player enhances its picture display capability by buffering a vulnerable channel through which viewer instructions enter the player. Ordinary viewer instructions pass over a relatively direct input channel (7, 24, 26, 30) linking a keyboard (6) and a remote storage device (5), but one nonetheless defined and safeguarded by a strict editing routine (10). Enhanced picture processing ordinarily entails difficult and unstructured access to the storage device (5) over this channel, bypassing the "user friendly" editing routine (10) and endangering prepared programs in the remote storage device (5). By interposing an external compiler (40) into this channel when enhanced processing is initiated, special picture displays can be generated without jeopardizing the integrity of the player. The external compiler (40) is connected through an external processor (44) to an interface port (50) on the player. Special picture programs are downloaded to the storage device (5) through the port (50) and, once stored, run independently of the external processor (44) under direction of an interpreter (67) in the player.
