ABSTRACT A compact gas-fired water heater in which a reservoir of bulk water (6) is heated, indirectly by a gas burner-fired immersion tube (7), and directly by mutual contact between the hot flue gases from the immersion tube outlet (8) and feed water droplets as they pass each other in contra-flow through apertures (14,15) in a plurality of plates (4,5). Figure 1 of the drawings is referred to.
