Abstract of the Disclosure One or more quartz tubes are utilized in an appliance for the concentration of for example sulphuric acid. Each quartz tube is heated from the outside, and the acid which is to be concentrated is fed in at the upper part of each tube. Concentrated acid is drained off from the lower part of each tube into a vessel and the vapours driven off from the acid during the concentrating process rise inside each tube, and are led off from the upper part of each tube. Inside each tube the acid first passes through a rectifica- tion zone located in the upper part of the tube, and then passes through a liquid film zone and a reservoir zone in that order. In the rectification zone the rising vapours cause, among other things, the inner surface of the quartz tube to be kept well moistened. In the liquid film zone is located one or more rotary devices which turbulate the rising vapours, whereupon they can act jointly with the acid dripping from the rectification zone so that the said drops of acid disintegrate and are thrown against the inner surface of the tube in the liquid film zone. The rate of flow and turbulence of the rising vapours and the supply of acid are so selected that the drops disintegrate, and together with the acid running down the in- ner surface of the liquid film zone from the rectification zone, form an essentially unbroken liquid film over the latter mentioned inner surface. In the reservoir zone the acid running down from the liquid film zone is collected. The collected acid is made to circulate while being boiled by means of the circulatory device located in the reservoir zone, from which the surplus concentrated acid is drained off via an overflow to the said vessel.
