METHOD FOR PROTECTING VOLATILE PRIMARY STORE IN A STAGED STORAGE SYSTEM BY CIRCULARLY JOURNALING UPDATES INTO FINITE NONVOLATILE LOCAL MEMORY Abstract of the Disclosure A method for protecting the contents of an LRU volatile primary store accessed by at least one processor. Data changes are written only to the primary store and thereafter are posted to a secondary store only upon destaging. The method steps include writing a copy of each changed record into a nonvolatile buffer concurrent with the changed record being written into the primary store; periodically copying the buffer contents on a circular journal stored on a nonvolatile medium; and selecting entries from one portion of the journal and rewriting said selected entries to another portion thereby permitting cyclic reuse of the journal storage space.
