ABSTRACT A composite aluminum faced, expanded graphite gasket includes at least one layer of aluminum mechanically secured to an expanded graphite layer. A plurality of projections or lugs extend from one surface of the aluminum layer and are mechanically clinched to the graphite layer to secure the layers together. The exposed surface of the aluminum is coated with a resilent sealing compound. A gasket including two aluminum layers mechanically clinched to the faces of the graphite layer as well as a method of fabricating both gasket configurations are also set forth.
