A SINTERING PROCESS FOR REFACTORY ARTICLES USING DIRECT-HEATED GASES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention comprises a process for firing or sintering a shaped silicon containing refactory article by preheating an oxygen-free,inert,or noble gas and introducing it into a furnace containing a formed particulate refractory green body. If a bonded silicon nitride article is the desired product, silicon in the green body is reacted with direct heated nitrigen. Silicon may be admixed with silicon carbide in the green body which after nitriding yields a silicon carbide - silicon nitride bonded article. -1-
