ABSTRACT An optical cable is formed by trunks connected end to end, fibres at the connected ends of the trunks being provided with two branches, independently connected to branches of fibres in the other trunk, so that one of the branch connections can be interrupted without interrupting communication through the cable. This enables fibres or trunks to be replaced or branched whilst the cable is in use. The connections between branches may be by fusion bonding, or by the use of optical fibre jumpers extending between branch connectors.
