Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a compound of the formula Image wherein X is -?-, -?- or -CH2-; ring B represents a carbocyclic aryl ring, substituted or unsubstituted, or a heterocyclic aryl ring; and Z and Z' taken individually represent the moieties to complete the auxochromophoric system of a diarylmethane or a triarylmethane dye when said S-containing ring is open and Z and Z' taken together represent the bridged moieties to complete the auxochromophoric system of a bridged triarylmethane dye when said S-containing ring is open. The compoundsare dye precursor compounds possessing a thiolactone, dithiolactone or thioether ring-closing moiety. The invention further relates to certain metal complexes thereof and to a method of synthesizing the thio- lactone compounds from the corresponding lactones.
